I used to be able to make Time Machine backups on my external HD and now I cant. Whenever I try it says my drive isnt big enough as my backup would take 500 gb yet my hard drive is only 250 gb.

What gives?

Time Machine is attempting to backup 500GB of data, and there's only 250GB available on your external hard drive. You either have a really big internal drive, or Time Machine is trying to backup itself.

Go to System Preferences > Time Machine > Options. Make sure that it's not trying to backup the same disk that it's using for backups.

My primary hard drive is only 250 GB.. In the TM Preferences I have the following drives/folders in do not exclude list:

iTRE - My external
Applications Folder
Caches Folder
