Time Machine Problem

So I decided to go and get snow leopard, and I did a clean wipe of my system, with my old install backed up with time machine. upon installing snow leopard I used the same disk for time machine and now I cannot access my old backup. have I lost all my backup? using "browse other time machine disks" does not work. Appreciate any help, thanks
