On my 2010 macbook I use TM to make backups of both my internal drives.

All good no issues.

But when I plug in the TM external drive it puts a folder in the bin.
The folder is a backup file.

inside is a file that appears to be a backup in progress file from 26th Jan 2017.
I cannot delete said folder or contents.

If I eject the TM drive then the file is gone from the bin.

more annoyance than a problem but can I do anything?

It's in the trash on the external. Every volume has its own Trash folder. How else do you expect it to work?

Clear the Trash folder on the external, problem solved.

Thank you but would you be kind enough to help my locate trash on the external time machine drive?

And is there a reason I am unable to empty trash via dock like normal?
It claims some of the files are in use.

I did a finder search for trash on external and found nothing.
Is it a hidden file? If so how do I show hidden files.

OK so found trashes on the external.

But says I do not have permissions to view or erase the file.

root owns ./Trashes so you cannot do anything under your id. you need to use sudo in the terminal.

What exactly are you trying to do in ./Trashes.

everytime I plug in my time machine backup drive it puts a folder in my bin, in the dock.

just want remove it.

If I eject my time machine backup drive the folder in bin goes too.
