So I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger and have been thinking about formating and doing a clean install. Since I installed Leopard, I have been running Time Machine to archive on an external HD. If I were to do a clean install, would time machine recognize my current Time Machine archive?

Yes, it does recognize the time machine volume.

It does this because the Backup is tagged with your MAC Address.
It does not matter if you name your computer something else... it will see the backup and start working.

You will however need to "enable" time machine with the slider under System Preferences though.

When installing leopard there's an option to restore your files from a TM drive. You should be fine.

It sounds like he wants a clean install of Leopard, not putting back his Tiger->Leopard upgraded install.
