I have a Mac Pro with 3 hard drives. One has the OS on it (Leopard), another has my data and the 3rd is my time machine backup. The latter 2 are both nearly full so I've ordered a nice big 1.5TB drive to be my new data disk. I plan on sticking the "old" data drive in the currently unused bay 4 to become another Time Machine target.

My question is this. When I put my new drive in the machine and copy all my data to it from my old data drive Time Machine will "think" (I'm guessing) that this is all new stuff that should be backed up and promptly create a new copy of it. This will be a half gig of wasted space as it's all already in Time Machine.

So... Is there any way I can convince Time Machine that my new data disk is actually still the old one (just bigger) and thereby prevent a great deal of wasted backup space!? Or is there a better process for achieving the same result, perhaps?

I'm imagining that TM uses the ID of the hard drive to identify which disk is which (in case you swap them around inside the machine) so this makes me think that my wishes are going to be somewhat tricky to realise!

Hopefully this makes some kind of sense!!

Appreciate any help.
