Time Machine restore question

I had to do a restore recently on my MBP. I restored from the install disk which was 10.5.2. After restore the OSX version was still 10.5.2 and I had to run all the updates etc. Is there any way for Time Machine to take my machine as-is and when I use an install disk to restore that it will restore everything? Actually come to think of it is it supposed to be this way as I was pretty sure Time Machine backed up everything. Thanks.
