Time Machine says HD is full?

Its a my passport thing. I deleted everything off of it.. yet not matter what I do time machine keeps giving me the same retarded message that "The backup requires 291.08 GB but only 257.12 GB are available."

It's a ****in 500BG drive with nothing on. So wtf?

Reformatted the HDD yet (if nothing is on it)?
What Mac OS X version are you using and how is the HDD connected (USB I guess)?
