Time Machine - Seemingly Constant Backups Running

Every time I look up at the Time Machine icon, a backup seems to be running. For example, here's what the Time Machine app shows as backups while I was asleep last night:

1:10am
2:20am
2:12am
3:13am
3:24am
4:24am
4:30am
5:33am
5:43am

What's going on here? Why are backups running so often?
