Options include NVME in an enclosure and a TB3 external drive

Anything else that's compact for travel?

T5 too I guess.

All of these are a waste of money. You don't need a super-fast disk for Time Machine, although they will make the first back-up faster. After that the incremental backups are relatively fast even on a slower hard disk.

A Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Touch 2TB Portable Hard Drive with Rescue Data Recovery Service is ~$70.00. But you didn't mention how big a TM disk you need.

Echo cheap HDD.

But if have decent amount of internal free space, and not away from home too long, Time Machine will backup without external locally. Yes, if catastrophic failure on internal, trouble, but if internal SSD, odds are something else will fail before it does.
