I just bought a 500 GB internal hdd for my Macbook, and now I'd like to use Time Machine to make a backup of it on my external 500 GB hdd. I would like to save the complete content of my internal hdd, which is about 410 GB, but when I want to start the backup, Time Machine gives an error message saying that there would not be enough space, since it would need 520 GB. :(

What's the reason for this discrepancy? I don't need to get files from last month or so, I would just like to always have a complete backup of the actual content of my drive. Shall I use another program?

Thanks for your help!
