Time Machine stopped working

As of yesterday, my Time Machine will not do a backup. I get an error message "Unable to perform backup, please use disc utility to check your disc". Disc utility says my external disc is fine. In preferences everything looks fine. I can open and "enter" Time Machine and still see all my files. There is plenty of available space on the disc. However, if I try to manually do a backup, it just sits forever on "preparing to backup".
Can anyone help me with this problem?
