I reformatted my computer the other night and opted to manually recover only certain files from Time Machine after the OS was installed and fully updated to 10.6.7. When I did, all the files for my user name were owned by the other user on my computer (despite me being an administrator and in my own user name while recovering them), and the same occurred when I logged out of my user, logged into the other user, and recovered some files there. Using chown -R on Desktop, Documents, et cetera, I was able to at least repair the main owner but I now have the following for each file:
<user name> - Read & Write
_unknown - Read Only
root - Read Only
I know that middle one should read 'staff' from looking at my other computer. Is there a way to fix that? Or is the 'staff' tag on my other computer's files a holdover from an older version of the OS? Because that computer has had files migrated pretty much from the beginning of the Mac OS X experience (starting with a Late 2001 iBook, through another iBook and a MacBook before ending up on a MacBook Pro).
