Say I have a 2010 17" Macbook Pro. I make a time machine backup from this computer with all of my apps, documents, user profile etc, then I buy a new 2011 Macbook pro, can I somehow use this time machine backup to load up the new computer to be just like my 2010 model?

Same for me...
anyhow i had a similar topic going. Boot the new computer up and use the "Migration assistant" to import everything from your time capsule backup. I would connect an ethernet cable as it will take a lot of time over wifi.
