I've started importing my MiniDV video, and therefore outgrowing my 500 GB Time Capsule (which has been excellent for over two years). I'd like to attach an external USB enclosure to the Time Capsule and use it for my iMac's Time Machine backups.

With the dual goals of cost savings and minimizing clutter, I'm thinking I'd buy a dual-bay USB enclosure that supports concatenating the disks together in SPAN/BIG mode (sometimes confusingly called JBOD?). I'd buy one drive now, and if/when I outgrow that, buy another drive later and use the SPAN/BIG mode to combine (concatenate) them together for additional space without having to buy another enclosure.

I'd like to have at least 1.5 TB now, but looking at HD prices it seems sensible and feasible to get a 2 TB disk now and later get another 2TB (or whatever is cost-effective then).

First, would this work? Will Time Machine on my iMac use a dual-bay enclosure that is USB-attached to a Time Capsule and configured to concatenate the drives?

Second, does anyone know of a ~$60 enclosure that supports SPAN/BIG mode with two 2TB drives (4TB total)? I haven't been able to find one!
