Time Machine: using hdd connected to another computer

I have two Macs connected to my home network. I use one as a server. Is it possible that I using an external hdd that I have, connect it to the server, and use it as my main computer's time machine disk?? I've tried just plugging it in, and while I have access to it, it doesn't see it as a disk. It sees it as a folder.
