My MBP has a 500GB HDD and i have about 70GB free. My backup drive is also a 500GB HDD and has been erased. I chose the drive for my Time Machine backup but it fails and Time Machine says it needs 507GB when the estimated was only 429GB. Why does it need the additional 80GB!!??

If your HD & backup drive are about the same size or same size in your situation, I don't think TimeMachine is a good backup choice.
Try SuperDuper or CCC.

What I do:
1T backup drive , 640G HD, using TimeMachine.
Also use a 1T offsite backup drive & use SuperDuper for it.
