On my iMac running 10.5, Time Machine started a backup yesterday morning and is still going! There's a file called '2010-05-260082003.inProgress' being used although it's showing the last modification date as 26th May (yesterday) at 8.20am. What do I do? Can I safely stop it somehow? Any help would be much appreciated...

How are you doing the intial time machine backup, eithernet or wireless? I ask because most recommend that if the Time machine is wireless the initial large backup via USB because it is so large then do the rest via wireless.

So stop the backup, reformat the drive, connect to it via USB/Ethernet and do the first backup via wire. Then disconnect it and let the others go wireless. This is the best way IMHO.
