Time Machine with 2 hard drives.

I have 1 Hard drive attached to my airport extreme base station which backs up my laptop wirelessly.

I have ordered a portable drive for backups while I am away from home.

Can I alternate between the two?

I'm not sure about that - Time Machine makes you pick a single volume to back up TO, regardless of the volumes you're reading FROM. If you switched between two drives, it would find the last backup on that drive and re-backup everything since the last one.

I GUESS it would work, but it might be more trouble than it's worth. Give it a try.
