My HD is 280 GB but time machine says it has only backed up 255 GB. I've checked the exclusions option and the only things on that list is bootcamp HD and the time machine HD itself.

Am I doing something wrong?

EDIT: I apologize if I posted this in the wrong section as I am new to this forum.

TM by default excludes many things like cache files that don't need to be backed up. It also would exclude your sleep/hibernation image. So it it normal to have the total TM backup size be less that the total of everything on your disk.

Thank you, had me worried for a bit. I also encrypted my time machine backup, do you know how long the encryption process takes? It's been going on for 3+ hours and it's only at 17%.

That sounds about right. I did mine with only 50GB and it took a couple hours.
