when time machine is backing up, can it slow down performance, lets say if I am searching the web, checking email, or using various apps, e.g. itunes, iphoto

if so, any recommendations? time machine on my pc is set to back up every hour, which can interfere with my daily use

depends on the speed of your drive. I don't even notice it backing up but then again I am plugged in through firewire 800. (I didn't notice it either when I was using usb, the backups just took a little longer)

The thing about time machine is once it makes your initial backup, it only adds the folders that changed so really its only updating any files you worked/added/deleted on since the last update.
