For my daily driver I have a 2018 Mac Mini i7/32/512. I also have a 2017 i7 MB/16/512 (top spec). I am using the Mini 90+% of the time but still want to have something portable. I’m nowhere close to using all the power in the Mini.

I also have a 2013 Mac Pro that‘s used for other needs.

I‘m wondering if the $1799 MBP would give me the best of both worlds - quad core performance, 4 TB3 ports, a good keyboard and portability. Or perhaps $1999 for the 1TB version. I’d get AC+ and this would be a purchase to last several years. I’m not stressed out if a 14” comes out later this year.

i know the top spec MB still has demand, and I should be able to get a decent price for my Mini - both sales would cover a MBP purchase.

Thoughts?

If I had a nice desktop like the 2018 Mini (I do), and if I also had a MacBook Pro (I do), the LAST thing I would want is to "combine" them.

There's nothing that beats having a good desktop "for desktop things", and a good laptop for "portable things".

If you like the new 13", sell the one you have now and get the new one.
But keep the Mini, too.

Thanks. As it's not a burning need I might just hold off for now.

I don't agree with Fishrrman often but in this case I do. I have the 2018 mm and a 15" MBP soon to be swapped for the new base 2020 13" MBP. I like the great desktop setup and prefer the 38" screen and speed.

I like having a portable laptop or one I use upstairs. I like having both options and if one had to go it would be the laptop.

I am on the opposite end compared to the earlier replies. I have a really good docked setup for work. I simply plug a single cable into my laptop and I am ready to go. My laptop is my desktop and laptop. If anything, I have thought about just leaving the laptop docked 24/7 and using something like an iPad Pro on the go.

It doesn't seem like you have a need to upgrade right now, but in the future I would just get a single machine that you dock and make your laptop the desktop and laptop.
