My daughter would like to get a laptop.. Ive thought about handing down my Mid 2010 13" MBP on Sierra. (2.66 core 2 Duo, 8GB ram, 500GB SSD) I love this machine.

I was waiting to see if the 2020 13 MBP would get the Magic Keyboard. In the meantime Ive seen a lot of negative threads about the 16"...

What is your opinion? Should I wait and see what the 13" is going to be like, or find a top tier Early 2015 13", or maybe look for a 2017 12" MB? ( I always gravitated to them in the Apple store, very compact and beautiful. probably not nearly as powerful and the MBP?)

Two things...

1. Very nostalgic thread for me. That 2010 MBP with those same specs was my first Mac laptop.

2. What do you need to do with the laptop?

I use my laptop for basic stuff, web browsing, video streaming, emailing, word proc.. only power hungry things I can think of is some gaming and very large iPhoto libraries.

I like to have the option to hook to a large monitor/tv while traveling for netflix and movies

If it were me with that kind of usage I would go to the Apple refurb store and get a 13” MacBook Air. It’s a great little machine with more power than the regular MacBook, which will give you more longevity. If you can adjust to the keyboard I think that’s definitely the way to go.

If you don’t like the keyboard and you want to stay in the same general size of device your only option, assuming you don’t want to move to an iPad, is to wait for the keyboard to make its way down to the rest of the laptop lineup. I have the 16” MBP now and it’s great, but spec wise it would be overkill for what you need and would be a pretty significant size bump from what you are used to. If you could get on board with the size then it’s likely something that could last you another 9 years with your use case. I wouldn’t be too turned off my some of the negative threads here. That’s just the nature of sites like this on the internet. The droves of people that buy one and have no issues don’t run online to sing its praises. Only ones you see are the people that have an issue trying to find a solution/get a feel for if others are experiencing the same.

I wouldn't let the negativity around the 16" dissuade you -- it's a combination of self-selection (people only tend to post when they have problems) and maybe a little bit of disappointment that the "unicorn" 16" isn't literally perfect. But it is still a great machine and easily the best iteration of this style of MBP.

But then again for your usage it would probably be overkill.

The logical move is to get a 13" Macbook Pro with the 2TB ports. You'd get a powerful machine with quad cores that, depending on usage, could get another nearly decade of use.

My heart says get a top of the line MacBook while you still can. Your fears about performance aren't warranted compared to the systems you mentioned. If you get the top end i5 or i7, it benchmarks about the same as a 13" from the same era. I love those little things.

If you want to stay with a "smaller form factor", you'll have to wait until May-June 2020, when we should see the new 13/14" MacBook Pro with the replacement scissors-design keyboard.

If you want to go to "larger", the 16" looks to be fine, despite the complaints of a few users. No new product can satisfy everybody...
