Which is the better option?

I ordered my iMac with the 3TB fusion drive. If I purchase the LaCie d2 Thunderbolt™ 2 drive in 3TB, will it function with Time Machine? I think I read that you need a BIGGER backup drive in order for TimeMachine to work.

I am also thinking about getting a Time Capsule, but I worry it will take 10 years to do a backup onto a Time Capsule over Wifi. (Though admittedly, I really don't know how the Time Capsule's work)

I have the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt™ 2, a RAID of 3TB and the time machine backups run perfectly and really fast, even over USB 2/3, its runs quicker than other enclousers I had of other brands.

Timemachine just makes a backup of what you have written to your mac. Your 3TB Fusion drive will backup fine just as long as the amount on data that you have is less than the drive space available on your backup drive. Timemachine makes multiple copies but when it runs out of drive space, it starts to delete the oldest copy.
