Edit: Something seemed to be corrupted in the file system and I just formatted it new. Using now a fast SSD as second TimeMachine drive. And this HDD for other backups.
I also have Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper. Could use both and each gets a partition. I think also those are still working with HFS what can be encrypted very fast when the drive is empty and doesn't annoy me like APFS.

Still wondering how a drive just began to decrypt out of nowhere...

Hi,

I have two TimeMachine drives, same size, both 8TB HDD and USB 3.0. I am using them since April all through the 15.x betas without any problem. Since a while it has a second partition with 1TB for backing up some other stuff manually but the other one too.

The only difference is I copied things on the second drives other partition while the first backup was still running. But I mostly do it that way.

Now I got this message for the second one after the first backup finished:

Had a look if there is "encrypt" in the menu and saw this:

How can I stop that? It would take ages to encrypt everything again. :( And how can this even happen by itself?

I found a command in a post from 2015 that should show the progress:

diskutil cs list

But seems not exist anymore.

The Seagate drive is the one what is decrypting. Looks already different.

Both are partitioned with a fixed size.

Just noticed the Backup to the WD drive didnt finish. It took hours and the last time I looked it was cleaning up. Trying again now, seems at least much faster:

Here it still shows encrypted. There is a difference to the other drive I forgot to mention. It's Case-sensitive.

This drive is holding some more older backups than the other one. Would it work to transfer those to the other TimeMachine drive?

I ejected it now normally to stop further decryption. Maybe there is a way to stop it...
