timeout when trying to connect to iphone wifi hotspot

hey, long time reader, first time poster.
i have an alu macbook running 10.6.7 and when trying to connect to an iphone wifi hotspot (have tried a few different iphones) it will just timeout.
it works over bluetooth and USB, but i need it to work over wifi.

any ideas?

Can other devices connect to the WiFi hotspot? Does the iPhone's WiFi work?

I am having the same problem here, but only recently and I have no idea what started it. I could use the Personal Hotspot over wifi very easily, but then it stopped working by always giving "connection timeout" errors on the other end.

No other laptop (mac or windows) can connect to my iphone. The iPhone shows a connection for a couple of seconds (the blue bar on top) but then I get a connection timeout on the laptop and it ends.

I searched the web but could not find a solution yet. Any news on this?
