Tinny sound

When my phone is locked and I get an alert, SMS or incoming call, the sound is very tinny or muffled. However, if I'm using the phone or if I go in to settings, it sounds fine

Anyone having this problem?
 
I must be the only one, must be a hardware fault rather than software

I'm going to return it to o2 for a replacement.
