Hi, my macbook pro 2021 16 inch silver version comes with several small marks on the newly “blackened” keyboard.

Can anyone who have also bought their laptop recently help me figure out if this is normal or I have received a defective machine?

It's fine. I hope you're prepared for how it'll look after you start pressing on those keys.

If there's anything wrong with the plastic stain and it starts flaking off you can take it to an Apple Store and they should have replacement keys they can swap in on the spot.

There are other known issues you should be checking that are more important. Like uneven key feel, uneven key lighting, rattly/mushy keys, SD cart slot not working properly.
You could be exchanging a small cosmetic defect for a real defect.

There is:
- a mark on the tab key
- a mark on the caps lock key
- a mark on the shift key
- a whole discolouration on the separator between the A and Q keys
- an obvious issue with the S key
- what looks like a dent on the D key.

Kindly send this computer back and get yourself a replacement while helping a poor soul in need of a powerful computer get a high-quality refurb for cheap.

I can see a tiny bump on the top of the ‘s’ key and the bottom of the ‘d’, which is well within my (high) tolerance for new machines; and nothing else that’s less than perfect.

It’s up to you of course, but I can’t begin to see why you would send this back.

I’d run my thumbnail over the blob on the D key and see if the key covering starts peeling.

I didn't know Apple issued every new MacBook with a free microscope...
And do some users wear gloves and work in dust free, climate controlled rooms? I really don’t blame someone for being picky for how much these machines cost but after typing on it a couple times you will probably have some microscopic scratches on it.

I think the more important thing to find out is if there is air underneath the paint bubbles on the keys. This is why I suggested running a thumbnail over the bubble to see if it starts to peel.

I've had that happen before. If I remember correctly, they can pop in new key caps for you in store now so it wouldn't even need to be a return.
