I’ve had my phone a week .. I absolutely love it from a performance point of view. Unfortunately though, yesterday I noticed that there are a fair number of tiny scratches on the back of it. I’m almost positive they weren’t there when it arrived and I am 100% positive that I’ve done nothing ‘careless’ that might make this happen. My concern is that maybe the pacific blue colouring is starting to come off?!

I’ve phoned Apple and they were good (as they most often are) and are swapping it out for me (arrghhh have to use a 6S until November 17th!) but I’m just wondering if anyone else has seen the same on the back of their phones?

The color is part of surface of the metal, so it can't come off. But if you scratch through it you'll see the natural aluminum color that's below the surface. There is nothing you can do about it, as it is normal wear and tear.

Yup, normally I’d agree but I’ve not been out of the house (lockdown!) and not had it in pocket or anything. It’s never happened to any of my other iPhones .. I just traded in my 11Pro Max and was paid for ‘as new’ but it was gold so maybe that’s the problem this time.
Anyway .. new phone on its way and I’ll, somewhat grudgingly, use a case to make sure I can get an ‘as new’ price for it next time around too!

I did err. The back of the Pro is glass, no? Then the whole depth of the glass should be the same color. The glass isn't colored just on top.

The Pro is stainless steel.

Yes, but only on the sides, right? He said his scratches were on the back. I corrected myself in post #4.

The color of the glass can’t be scratched of, it’s colored on the inside, not the outside.

This is exactly what I was thinking. How did the OP manage to scratch that?!

my pacific blue developed a tiny tiny scratch on the back glass. its super tiny but i noticed it. i use cases with my phones anyway so not a big deal but ocassionally around the house i'll use it caseless to admire its build and design.

i'll try to take a pic when i'm at home

The Matte glass will always show scratches more than glossy. At least with glossy the light will reflect off of the glass making scratches less prominent and visible. Matte however, will show every little ding and scratch. Gold and Silver will be more forgiving, but the other two will be a nightmare with wear and tear. They sell glass screen protectors for the back. I would recommend them if you’re concerned about damage.

So some of you are saying the color is underneath the glass or made into the glass. It can’t be scratch? The glass can be scratched but the color can’t?

Correct. The color can't be scratched off. Only the glass can get scratched.

Matte or shiny. glass is very hard to scratch. And op diddnt even carry it in the pocket or take it outside the house.

No matter how careful you are it only takes a moment to scratch it. You probably just didn't notice when it happened. They don't magically appear without anything happening. I'd just put it in a case or deal with scratches that are bound to develop no matter how careful you are if you go caseless. Exchanging it is a temporary solution.

Of course it can lol but nobody is talking about scratches from the inside. They're talking about scratches on the outside.

Yeah I understand. Just keeping the expectations right as some people were saying the colour is part of the glass itself.

Are you guys saying that if you get scratches during the initial warranty period you can just exchange it? How do you even have that conversation with Apple?
