I thought I share some experience in case someone is in the same position as I was:
In case you have an iPhone (but works with all smartphones) and you are mainly interested in a data plan (only call, text occasionally) and you don't need LTE, I can recommend having a look into SpeakOut Wireless (SO) pre-paid.
SO runs on the Rogers network, so you should have decent coverage in and around the big cities in Canada and the SIMs are sold either online via www.speakout7eleven.ca or in the 7Eleven stores.
The special thing about SO is that they offer unlimited internet for $10 a month - that's it! Calls and texts are 25ct / per text or minute unless you book a special package (see website). Right now they have a special offer again where you buy a 100$ top-up and get 125$ value credited. I did that for my iPad and have now unlimited internet for $100 (plus tax that is) for a whole year!
The SIM card itself is standard size and we use three of them at the moment in an iPhone 4, iPad 2 and iPhone 5. All you need is an unlocked phone (or locked to Rogers for that matter) SIM card cutter and change the APN settings via unlockit.co.nz.
The limitations of the network are that it is 3G only (so no LTE) and that certain apps like WhatsApp don't work since all comms run via a proxy server and mainly on port 80. However this is the only app that comes to my mind, everything else works fine.
There is a special forum in case you have questions here: http://www.speakoutwireless.ca/speak/
Why I posted this tip? Coming from Europe the phone plans over here are a rip-off and totally unacceptable to me, so I checked all options and am very happy with the network and the coverage etc since earlier this year.
