So one day you plug in the headphone and you feel mushy and you don't get that solid CLICK anymore, time to clean that headphone jack. No need to panic and Arrrr I don't want to drive 2 hours to the Apple store, should I have them replace$ the jack blah-blah-blah.

The headphone jack is filled with dirt, lints, eventually is gonna happen.

All you have to do is to find a small paper clip, use a pliers to make yourself a tiny L hook as pictured, POWER OFF phone and get the hook in there to pull out the lints. Go twist-twist-out. With the right lighting you can actually see the obstruction. Once you start seeing shinny metal from the bottom of the barrel, you are done.

DIY-it bro!
