Tips on phone battery drain

Just got a series 1 Apple Watch and I have a 2 yr old iPhone 6 Plus. Does anyone have any tips on how to slow the phone battery drain on an already old ass battery?

In general the more you use your Watch (like to check notifications) the more you will save on your iPhone's battery.

I have an iPhone 6 and not experiencing excessive battery drain on the phone with my S1 Watch paired.
