Hi, I have an iphone 4s that I'd like to use as a phone, but due to my finances, I can't afford a contract. What apps do you reccomend for texting and calling?
I'm sorry if this isn't in the right place, I'm new.

Magicjack (if you're in the US) and iMessage (for other iDevices)/Textfree. All are 100% free, though if you want a "regular" phone number from MJ, you'll have to pay for it.

Is there a way to use imessage for texting phone numbers without a texting plan(like over wi-fi)

Only if the person you're texting also has an iOS device with iMessage.

This. You can text any iMessage phone numbe regardless of whether you have a phone number tied to your iMessage or not. This is how you can use iMessage on a iPod Touch or iPad.

Sign up for Google Voice and use Talkatone. It's what I use when traveling to other countries. You can send and receive calls over WiFi and also use it for text messaging.
