I have a WD 3TB external hard drive that I have been using as a TM external hard drive. I have had it for 14 months and so far it has worked just fine. Since I was down to 400 GB or so and did not want TM to automatically delete older backups, I decided to do some housecleaning on my TM backups. I successfully deleted several large files and directories (such as long movies, photo libraries, and virtual machines). When deleting an individual iPhoto library backup, the "deleting file" window got stuck. I rebooted the computer, and noticed the HD would not mount. In disk utility, the drive does appear in the sidebar, but the volume is greyed out. Attempting to repair disk does not work, eventually getting stuck on "updating boot support partition", which can only be stopped by either unplugging the HD or rebooting.
At this point after some googling and troubleshooting without success, I figured my drive has either failed or become corrupted. But then just for the heck of it I tried to mount the TM volume over the network instead of locally, and surprisingly, it mounts! I can even navigate to my files within the backups.backupd directory, so I know my data is still there, intact. With this in mind, what could the problem be?
Thanks for your help!
