TM maybe fried firewire chip

Working on a MBpro. My external firewire HD works perfectly with the other computers, while since then i created there a backup of my system with time machine, the computer and the HD are not able to change more than a couple gigs of data...at that point all the apps freeze and i have to manually disconnect the HD. It's as if the computer looses connection with the disk.
Anyone having similar problems?
