I bought a att 6 on from my bro and put my tmobile sim in and not it says sim not valid

Anyway to get around this? My brother bought at the apple store out right

I thought it would be unlocked if he bought from the apple store

Did you get it on a contract? If yes it is locked for good.

My understanding is that if you buy any iPhone full price at Apple, it will be unlocked. Maybe someone with more experience can chime in.

You can buy straight from apple and still get a contract . Did he pay the full price? If yes, then there is a problem.

He likely has to activate it with his sim, then contact AT&T to unlock it. At that point you should be able to use it. Just a guess. Maybe a bad one...
