edit: oh and can someone tell me why the contrast looks darker on Safari than it does in Firefox?

Did you save the images as sRGB? Safari recognizes color management, whereas Firefox does not. If you saved the file in Adobe 1998 or a color space different than sRGB Safari will recognize it, but Firefox will not.
