Hello everyone,

I've never heard anything but good things about Apple certified refurbished products. So recently I bought a refurbished 16-inch MacBook Pro at a nice discount compared to a new one.

Overall it seems to be a very nice machine, but in the first week two things have happened that make me doubt its ability to serve me for years to come.

I'm still within the return window, but I'm torn as to whether or not to return it, because aside from these two occurrences, it's been very solid.

The first hitch was less than a day after updating to 10.15.5, from 10.15.3 I think. A few seconds after waking from sleep, the fans spun up for a second or so, and the machine turned off. After booting it up again the error report information showed this.

Code:
CPU Machine Check Architecture Error Dump (CPU: UNKNOWN, CPUID: 0x80000009000906EA)
Core: 0
  IA32_MC3_STATUS=0xBE00000000800400
  IA32_MC3_CTL=0x0
  IA32_MC3_ADDR=0xFFFFFF800503DD1B
  IA32_MC3_MISC=0xFFFFFF800503DD1B
Core: 0
  IA32_MC4_STATUS=0xFE00000000800400
  IA32_MC4_CTL=0x0
  IA32_MC4_ADDR=0xFFFFFF800503DD1B
  IA32_MC4_MISC=0xFFFFFF800503DD1B
Core: 0
  IA32_MC11_STATUS=0xEE0000000040110A
  IA32_MC11_CTL=0x0
  IA32_MC11_ADDR=0xFF71CBC0
  IA32_MC11_MISC=0x3880000086

That doesn't look like a regular kernel panic…

Now I'm now worried that there is a hardware problem that only rarely manifests, especially because this machine was returned once before — because of this same issue? I won't know. I don't seem to be the first to see this, but it does not seem very common either. The diagnostic test reports no problems.

I called Apple Support and all they did was let me run the diagnostics again (no problems reported) and boot into safe mode. Not very helpful.

Then, a few days later, I got the issue where the notebook doesn't recognize its own keyboard and trackpad for a minute or so after waking from sleep. That problem seems to be more common for others, and I'd guess it's less likely to be a hardware problem, but still: not a great impression in the first week of owning an almost-new computer.

What would you do? How likely do you think it's a hardware problem? I'm leaning towards returning it to avoid problems down the line, but at the same time I'd rather not because it's a hassle to try again while it might be for nothing.

I have a few days left to decide. Thanks for reading!

Alright, thanks for the feedback and unanimous opinion. That's what I will do!

@Namara Agreed that this can happen to a brand-new device as well, though I would expect these sorts of "hidden" issues to be present in a larger percentage of refurbs compared to new, because when somebody returns their device due to something that happens so rarely, Apple doesn't know the reason for the return either, then won't encounter it in their tests before putting it up for sale as refurbished. Does that thought make sense?

That said, I'll probably buy refurbished again, and just hope for better luck next time.
