What condition was your phone in? I'm going to go on the Apple Upgrade Program for the 7 and I'd like to go caseless. I know that it obviously needs to be in working order and the screen intact. Do they count wear and tear and scuffs against it or will they accept it?

I was looking at the prompts the specialist was getting to inspect the phone I was turning in and basically it's a function test. I had a silicone case on it the whole time so he didn't see the back until I was leaving and took the case off. As long as it works and the screen isn't cracked you're ok.

Mine had plenty of wear and tear, and even a crack on the screen. They didn't care. They pretended to look at the ports to see if there was water damage and then just casually accepted the phone. As long as it's functional I think it's fine.

I am hoping they do the same thing at Verizon. Mine old 6 was kept in an Otterbox case the whole time, but I guess pieces of dirt or whatever got up under the back of the case and scratched the back of my phone. Also, there seems to be some discoloration on the back of the phone where there was a cut out for the Apple logo.
