from another thread...i was hoping to get answers without hijacking the other one.

and if you want to unlock 2.2 , you have to make sure you do the right steps
upgrade to 2.1
then use pwnagetool to ugrade to 2.2
what this does is keeps the baseband from being flashed (something that the 2.2 update does) so that it remains in an unlockable form

if it has been upgraded to 2.2 at any other time, in any other way, then you won't be able to unlock

so make sure its not a 2.2 already before you buy

Can you explain what this means?
I'm just about to buy an unlocked 2.2, figuring 2.2 is the version to get.
If it was unlocked w/o pwnagetool it will NEVER be able to be updated and unlocked again?
You don't think someone will crack the next version to be unlocked?

Should I buy a 2.1 version and use pwnagetool, or is 2.1 too high to start out with?
I was hoping to buy one unlocked already, so i don't screw up the process of unlocking myself.

Most of the unlocked ones mention Cydia in the ads. Is that used to unlock them, or is it just a 3rd party app?

Thanks,

Joe

The post you quoted is only relevant to the iPhone 3G. So for the iPhone "2G", the baseband update does not apply.

It's easy to unlock, so if you can get it cheaper, buy yourself a regular (not-unlocked) iPhone "2G" and do it yourself. The firmware version, be it 2.1 or 2.2 is irrelevant. You can update the firmware and still unlock the phone.
