ok so im downloading some toast files and iw as wondering to get them to install the software they contain on my mac do i jsut rename them .dmg or what??

i know that they are from the program toast by roxio but isnt that only for burning them to CD? i dont need to burn them to CD i jsut need them opened but i think that the guy burned them of the original disc using toast so id rather not have to pay for the program.

will they open on their own or can i rename them .dmg?

Renaming them to .dmg almost certainly won't work, since they aren't .dmg files. I believe they should mount fine though. iirc Leopard added support for Toast files in DiskImageHelper.
