Toast necessary?

I have some movies in .avi format on my MBP and would like to have copies on DVD... can I just burn the file to DVD and have it work or do I need a program like Toast? I don't have much experience burning DVDs, so any help is appreciated

Yes Toast would be the easiest and best way to do it. Toast is a great piece of software.

Toast is a great app.I used to have about 4 different things to do what toast does.

But if you just want to burn the media files to DVD's,as a backup.OSX has a burn feature built in.
