Toast problems burning avi's

I recently bought a Lacie DVD burner for my Macbook and every time I try and burn a movie (mostly AVI's), the disk fails. It also takes hours to encode and sometimes doesn't even get that far. Is there some way I can change the format of the movies as I've heard .AVI doesn't work well with Toast. (I'm using Toast 7 to burn with). Any info would be appreciated as I've wasted about 10 DVD disks.
