Apple has canceled all of its Today at Apple sessions in Apple retail locations in Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area, two of the places in the United States that are seeing some of the worst coronavirus outbreaks.

Searching for Today at Apple sessions in the SF Bay Area or around Seattle provides results that say there are currently no classes available. Apple has also canceled all Field Trip programs, which allowed teachers to take students to Apple Stores.

Apple sent out notices to stores in these areas asking them to cancel all sessions from March 8 to March 29, according to an Apple retail source that spoke with MacRumors. Apple has also canceled Today at Apple sessions in Italy.

In addition to canceling Today at Apple sessions, Apple has ordered extra cleanings of display products throughout the day, and the number of chairs at the Genius Bar and cubes in the Forum area have been reduced to add additional space between customers.

In areas with severe coronavirus outbreaks in Italy, South Korea, and China, Apple has closed stores entirely, which is still an option if the outbreak in the United States grows worse. Right now, it appears that Today at Apple sessions have only been canceled in Washington and the SF Bay Area, but these shutdowns could also spread to other stores if additional areas see significant coronavirus infections.

I think the event for march 31 will be canceled too, so, not new ipad annoucement anytime soon x.x

Maybe just delay WWDC too. I feel this year they will bring up that transition topic in 2020 so they won't completely cancel it.

They may push WWDC to September, combining two events into one. There seems to be few rumours circulating about macOS 10.16, so maybe they could use the extra time anyway. I haven't even installed 10.15 yet due to the dramatic changes. A major OS upgrade every two years is more reasonable than every year, I think.

I'm worried that Apple, having little cash on hand and operating on razor-thin margins, may not be able to survive this virus. Hold strong, Mr. Cook!

(Okay, where's the "sarcasm" button? I just know someone's gonna think I'm serious...)

Apple was wise to pad their margins so generously. Many companies will be suffering tremendously right now because of their lack of "cash in the bank". The high prices may have been hard on many of us, but we (as customers) will win out in the end because of Apple's long-game play with regards to building up cash assets to ride out storms like this.

This is like canceling an event for flu season. I'm about ready to ask my doctor to inject corona directly into my bloodstream so I can show everyone it's all hype. If you are 80+ years old or have a serious heart condition, stage 4 cancer, or other condition in which your life hangs in the balance - be fearful. Everyone else, relax. When was the last time you got the flu and said "welp, this could be it, I had a decent run. Honey, give the kids my love".

The media hype on this has not only caused panic, but has costed the economy trillions. The sooner we all get this and recover, the sooner we can get back to normal. Hopefully we can learn from this one and not let it happen again. I wish someone would put the media in check, but they've grown too powerful.

i agree completely, but look even at this site – every other story(at least) is about this. it's great to be careful and wash your hands, but for a germaphobe like me it's no game changer :)

So you’re saying that if you have the flu, you’d just go on with your normal day-to-day and let others get sick.

But then again, this is not the flu, it’s a new virus, which may be more contagious (certainly looks that way), for which there’s no vaccine, but, luckily, you believe it’s a virus incapable of mutating in any way, so it’s only the old & sick who will die and who really cares about them anyway.

You’re quite the human being.

Totally the same as influenza. I mean, Italy quarantines 1/4 of their population every year, about the same time that South Korea sends the military to sanitize their streets.

Americans are so egotistical - "it's a hoax" "its not big deal" - but not smart enough to look at South Korea and Italy and realize it's about to happen in the USA! At least SK has more hospital beds per capita than the US.

The biggest agenda item for WWDC is to introduce new versions of iOS and macOS to developers. I don't think Apple wants to introduce a new version of iOS in September with nearly zero app support.

That's assuming the September event is on schedule.

why is it off topic and ask Apple to move 100 percent of it's manufacturing out of china?
I think it's the right thing to do since the Chinese are never honest with America and suppress peoples free speech
South Korea, India, Vietnam and other countries to move Apple manufacturing to don't do this?

There's only 1 group of Americans who use the term hoax.

I’m sure they’ll cope. Macrumours - aka the shareholders outlet - might be sad though.

It’ll be buggy as hell anyway. The extra time will let Apple improve the quality.

Oh sure, most of us are not at risk of dying. I suppose you need the capacity to care about other people to to understand why people are concerned about this virus. If you don't understand, you likely will never understand.

The idea that "media hype" is the cause of the economic disruptions is laughable from any perspective. Factories and events are being affected because of expert recommendations and best practices. The people who make these decisions don't spend their days obsessing over cable news commentary, like some Reality TV President of the USA.

Well said. The industry that I work in is making some serious plans to try and continue to work, assuming we get a certain percentage of cases, and prevent spread within the workplace. It’s no joke. And it’s no hoax.
To put it bluntly, it’s a cold you may die from. It’s not as simplistic as the flu. People get vaccinated for flu. They can’t with this.

That's a relief! All these doctors and institutions are saying Covid19 and influenza are not the same. They say that Covid19, unlike the flu, might be airborne transmittable. They say that antivirals are known to address flu symptoms, but we don't yet know how Covid19 will respond. They say that Covid19 is both more contagious and more deadly. They say that there is no vaccine for Covid19, while the flu vaccine is broadly available.

Some loony-tune "expert" said that the US produced ~170,000,000 doses of the flu vaccine for this season, but there are exactly zero doses for Covid19. How great it is to learn that all of this is untrue! Thanks person on the internet!

I know they had some success with some older HIV drugs ritonavir/lopinavir in China. So there’s potential antivirals, but none of the usual ones work. Basically there’s no treatment for it except for symptomatic. Which is scary.

Apple also just cancelled some ‘Today t Apple’ events at the Michigan Avenue store in Chicago:
  • Miss Spoken will NOT be hosting a storytelling event at the Apple Store on 3/18. Per Apple, "Apple is taking preventative measures to safeguard the health of our customers, employees and partners during this time."
