In a bit of a surprise move, the new iPad introduced today was not officially called the 'iPad 3' or 'iPad HD', but simply the 'New iPad'.

Knowing this, what do you realistically think this fall's iPhone will be called?

Simply "Apple iPhone" or "iPhone" just like the third generation iPad's name is simply "Apple iPad" or "iPad" (the name is NOT "New iPad" - the "new"-part is only there because, well, it is new - they won't be calling it the new iPad when it is, for example, Christmas).

Other possibilities:
- iPhone 4G
- iPhone LTE
- iPhone 6

Definitely not:
- iPhone 2G
- iPhone 3G
- iPhone 3GS
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 4S
- iPhone 5

Your question is invalid since the 3rd gen iPad is not called "New iPad"

I think it'll be called iPhone, just like the rear of the previous 5 generations of iPhone have been branded.

Do you and the people that start these types of silly threads have NOTHING better to do with your lives? Do a search and respond with the number of "what's the next iPhone going to be called" threads there are.

Apple should take the one name approach it should simply be the iPhone not 5,6,5lte just IPHONE , any way that's my opinion.

Isn't it just called "iPad" ?? Thats the way most products are named when new models come out. Not sure why we get all hung up on numbers.

I'm showing you that a sixth generation iPhone can't be called the fifth one. And yes, the 4 in iPhone 4 stands for the fourth generation iPhone.

You just made your argument invalid being that the 4s is the 5th generation iPhone.

That being said they will call it "iPhone" but announce it as "The New iPhone" just like they did with the iPad this year.

The iPhone 4S is the fifth generation iPhone.

right.... and you said they can't call the 6th generation phone iPhone 5. Yet they called the 5th generation phone the 4s.
Yep, the iPhone 4S is a much speedier model of the iPhone 4 - thus it is called iPhone 4S(peed).

A number, and solely a number, represents the generation. 4S is more than a number.

Oh my, what an original thread! Lucky thing that this exact topic hasn't shown up before.

Not a single discussion about the crucially important question of the name of the next iteration of the iPhone.

Fantastic!!!

Before the iPhone 4 came, someone made a site called iPhone4.com. Apple bought it and it takes you to Apple's website showing off the iPhone. They just bought or are trying to take the site iPhone5.com.

I'm going for Colin.

That's right the iPhone Colin. Has quite a nice ring to it, don't you think?

i was thinking they should call it, the next iphone ;)

I think it will be like the iPad naming.

Future Apple devices will be known as iPhone, iPad, iMac etc with no numbers or letters.

In the future, previous models will be referred to as 'iPad (Spring 2012)' sorta like the MacBooks.
