Cruise, Holmes welcome 'Tomkitten'

Tuesday, April 18, 2006; Posted: 8:43 p.m. EDT (00:43 GMT)

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in February.
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- The Tomkitten has arrived.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, the high-profile pair dubbed TomKat by the media, had a baby girl Tuesday, said Cruise spokesman Arnold Robinson.

The baby, named Suri, weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 20 inches long, he said.

"Both mother and daughter are doing well," Robinson said in a prepared statement.

The name Suri has its origins in Hebrew, meaning "princess," or in Persian, meaning "red rose," the statement said.

The baby was born in Los Angeles but the exact location was not disclosed.

It's the first child for Holmes, 27. Cruise, 43, has an adopted daughter and son from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

Details surrounding the birth, which was planned under the tenets of the Church of Scientology as a silent procedure, weren't disclosed.

Poor kid. Well, rich kid. But I feel sorry for her.

Edit: and, no, I don't know if he ate the placenta. ;)

hahaha, there are so many "in" jokes in this thread :D I love it!

Great title. Great comments.

Suri is destined to become another Hollywood brat.

Poor Suri doesn't really have a chance. She's going to be scrutinized long before she even knows she exists.

It's Liza Minelli all over again.

wow, i do feel bad for her. she probably won't have a boy friend, let a lone a friend until she is 18 and can leave her father's wrath.

And what an ugly name.

i am sure, he would keep quiet about this.

Of course - one should never speak when one's mouth is full.

I was hoping they'd have a boy, they could name it Xenu Jr. Since it's a girl they should call it Xena, which translates to "bad TV show".

Now that their daughter has been born, I suppose it is time to consider my life complete as well. Now the race truly heats up as to which of the paparazzi will get the coveted picture that supposedly will go for as much as two million dollars. The media madness with celebrity nonsense continues unabated.

Whats wrong with calling a baby a real name these days? I mean, first Gwyneth Paltrow has that Apple kid, the Beckhams steam of strange names. I just don't get whats wrong with names like their parents; Chris, Steve, Jonathan. I dunno. They must be special.

Not surprised they called her that. Cruise needs a reality check.

Poor kid. :(

The sad thing is...I think that may be true.
And what was the point of the silent birth? If Katie can make all the noise she wants, that kinda defeats the purpose. Because she is screaming, and making noise, and freaking the kid out because *gasp* she is born in an environment where her mother is screaming! Probably don't matter one way or the other if everyone else is silent.

After her first child, I thought that a brother for Apple had a good chance at being named Pomegranate. Oh well, maybe next time. Given the breathless atmosphere that has taken over Hollywood related shows like ET and Access Hollywood, any day now they should open with something really important.

"Good evening, this is Mary Hart reporting from Los Angeles. According to reports from insiders who have exclusive information, the official times that newborn Suri Holmes Cruise had her diaper changed yesterday were as follows: 6:52 a.m. ... 9:04 a.m. ..."

Hah, I just realised. "Surrey Homes"... Let's pray she never buys a house in the south-east of England :D
