Ok, so I followed iFixit's guides to taking apart my iphone 3g to replace the battery and check the power button. Everything came apart fine.

My question is, with the power button, their guide helps you replace the actual button. Now my button looks fine but I'm more concerned about the contact and traces. but here's my question:

The power button would not work just holding it down, but occassionally it would work if you squeezed the phone very tightly around the button and pressed at the same time. Now I don't know much about electronics, but if the traces were severed wouldn't this just not work at all? And if it's not this what else could it be, seeing as the button seems to be intact for the most part.

Any help or suggestion is much appreciated!
