What tool bar are you speaking about? A web browser tool bar or the OS X Menu Bar?

How do I remove items from the tool bar?

Most apps you can right click in the toolbar and select "customize toolbar", then drag off what you don't want.

Are you maybe talking about the menu bar at the top of the screen where the time/date is? You can remove items from there by using a command key drag.
