Time sure flies, and we're now less than a month away from the 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference where Apple will introduce new software updates. Rumors are picking up ahead of the event, so we thought we'd highlight some of the updates that we're looking forward to learning more about.

  1. The new iOS design. We've been hearing that Apple is planning a major design overhaul for iOS 19, with a look that's inspired by visionOS. Round buttons, glassier interface elements, and a simplified design style are expected. It's going to be the biggest design change since iOS 7, which was controversial when it launched. We're sure to see some of the same love it or hate it type of reactions with the 2025 revamp.
  2. macOS 16's name. One of the big mysteries that's always unveiled at WWDC is what Apple plans to name the next-generation version of macOS. Apple has been naming new versions of macOS after California landmarks since 2013, and we're not out of names yet. There are a bunch of names Apple has trademarked over the years, including Condor, Redwood, Shasta, Skyline, Pacific Miramar, Mammoth, Grizzly, Redtail, Tiburon, and Rincon.
  3. New app designs. Along with the overall iOS 19 interface update, Apple is overhauling its apps to adopt the new design language. Expect buttons with more transparency that puts more focus on content, pop out menus, rounded buttons and tab bars, and that same glassy visionOS look.
  4. More battery life. iOS 19 will bring an AI-powered battery management feature that will analyze how you use your device and make automatic adjustments where possible to minimize battery usage. The new AI battery mode will be able to limit app and system feature power draw based on your usage habits.
  5. Live translation for AirPods. Apple is developing an AirPods feature that will translate in-person conversations from one language to another, and it's a feature that is expected to come in iOS 19 and an AirPods firmware update. It's likely going to be limited to the AirPods Pro, and could be tied in some way to the AirPods Pro 3 that are coming this year.
We've got more on what's coming at WWDC in our iOS 19 roundup and our WWDC 2025 roundup, so make sure to check those out.

WWDC 2025 will begin with a keynote event on June 9 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Apple will have a live stream available, but we'll also be providing coverage here on MacRumors.com and through the MacRumorsLive Twitter account for those who aren't able to watch.

I'm looking forward to:

  • How they address the dumpster fire that is the Apple intelligence missed promises from last year.
  • The court case and appeal.
Or will we just get Tim Cook doing his normal presentation coach derived top and tail speeches with a script written by a marketing droid (and not Siri thankfully) full of platitudes and saying nothing much at all?

Here's a clue - it's going to be the sentence above.

Meh, iOS 19 is OLD NEWS! Everybody is getting stoked for iOS 19.4, which will feature the ALL NEW Siri. And, Apple didn't stop there. For the first time EVER, Siri will now respond based on personal information and what is on screen, powered by the best-in-class Apple Intelligence, known for the privacy only Apple can provide. This is the biggest leap-forward in Siri since Apple revolutionized the personal assistant space. Apple can't wait to see the incredible things customers do with the ALL NEW Siri featured in iOS 19.4. Apple thinks you're gonna love it!

Live translation sounds useful. With a decent implementation i see myself using it. In Europe there is alwasy demand for this.

1. Yawn, it will be full of bugs and usability will drop even further that it is now.
2. Who cares
3. "...new design language." what does that even mean? It means we have a bunch of marketing speak for changes that will be useable and terrible. Change for change sake. Maybe Apple should reach out to some users for ideas because theirs suck.
4. So now Apps will refuse to respond because you have used up your energy allotments for the day?
5. Live translations of what. Siri cannot even recognize my own voice let alone someone else in a foreign language. Expect this to work sometime around 2030.

Time to spend time catching up to Android 13 let alone latest Android features instead of round buttons.

Siri was amusing a decade ago getting it to call you a swear word it’s now just an embarrassment.

Waiting to see the new design of iOS. Hopefully all the new announced features will be available at least by the year end. Also would like to see what Apple will be announcing with regard to Apple Intelligence.

Waiting for the shoe to drop and Apple announce dropping Intel support along with Rosetta ii.

Live Translation is Processed on the iPhone Not AirPods and it should work with H2. AirPods 4 and pro 2 have the h2 so both should work

I swear Siri is getting dumber and dumber lately. I took my daughter to middle school orientation the other day, and she scandalized about hearing that there were kids using vapes in the bathroom in middle school. My wife mentioned the song "Smokin in the Boys Room" and my kids hadn't heard it before.

So I use Siri, while driving using CarPlay, and said "Play 'Smokin in the Boys Room'" and she said "I'm sorry but I couldn't find that speaker?" so I said "Play 'Smokin in the boys room' by Motley Crue" and she said "I'm sorry but I couldn't find that speaker?" so I said "Play 'Smoking in the boys room' by Motley Crue on Apple Music" and Siri said "I'm sorry but I couldn't find that speaker?" She finally got it when I said "Play the song titled 'Smoking in the boys room' by Motley Crue on Apple Music." I assume she kept thinking I was referring to a speaker in a room called "boys room" in my house, even though I was miles away from my house leaving my child's new middle school. And no, I don't have a room named that at home, or even close to that. I don't even have that many speakers, just a HomePod mini and a Sonos Arc Ultra, one in the Kitchen and one in the Movie Room.

I had another weird example the other day. I asked Siri "What is the average rainfall for April in [my city and state]?" and my city is one of the larger cities in my state so there should be info readily available, and she said "The average sliding 31-day rainfall during April in [city] is rapidly increasing, starting the month at 3.1 inches, when it rarely exceeds 5.1 inches or falls below 1.5 inches, and ending the month at 4.1 inches, when it rarely exceeds 7.2 inches or falls below 1.5 inches." and I've never been more confused in my life by a Siri response, aside from maybe that time when she just completely forgot how to pronounce any proper names for a day or two, or the time where her voice sounded like it was underwater for a day. I then said "Ask ChatGPT what is the average rainfall for April in [my city and state]?" and she responded with ChatGPT: "In [my city, my state], the average rainfall in April is approximately 4.9 inches (124 millimeters)." and I looked it up at several sources to be sure and yeah, that was definitely very close to the range of other sources online, which all seemed to vary within a tench of an inch or so.

I've heard people online complaining lately that "new" Siri can't even get really basic things right sometimes like the date or day of the week. That is just pathetic. I think they're going to have to pull a deal like they did with Microsoft when Steve Jobs came back, and wherein Microsoft basically saved them with investment and providing office and Internet Explorer as the default on Mac. Apple was years away from releasing Safari and behind the industry. They find themselves here again with AI (though I don't think they need saving from an investment perspective) and they just need to make a deal with some company for deeper integration, with the option of course to turn it off. They're clearly not ready, as the leaked internal meetings showed that it only works about 2/3 of the time. That is seriously bad numbers for something that should work 99%+ of the time. Especially if it's going to be an agent acting on your behalf, that should be more like 99.9%.

I’ve been using macOS since Mac OS X 10.1 Puma, and I think it’s time to retire the name for good. I can’t recall most of the macOS versions from a version or two before the current.

Just stick to the version number. Even better, synchronize the version number with iOS and iPadOS by skipping from macOS 16 to 18 and calling the next major update macOS 19.

Do the same for watchOS and visionOS.

Finally for crying out loud, give HomePod operating system an official name, something better than awkward audioOS (adios!) or HomePod Software. We know that it's running a stripped down version of tvOS and most of us think it should be called homeOS, which probably will be adopted by HomePod with the screen.

You forgot these two:

6. Updated Pro XDR Display.
7. Updated Studio Display.

You can have my number afterwards if you want it Gurman.

Here's some more guesses:

Apple Intelligence+
Only works with iCloud+, requires $10/month subscription, takes 7 seconds to tell you the weather (often for the right city). Tim Cook calls it “profoundly transformative"

Vision Pro 2
Now 500 grams lighter, $500 heavier
