We're right around the midpoint of October now and we've yet to see any signs of an Apple media event to introduce new iPad and Mac hardware, so it's looking increasingly likely that rumors of the announcements coming via press release rather than an event are correct. The last week of the month may end up being fairly busy with iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura releases and potentially some of that rumored new hardware.

Other news this week included the release of iOS 16.0.3, delivering a number of important bug fixes while we await the larger iOS 16.1 release before the end of the month. We also shared some rumors about the next-generation iPhone SE and Apple TV, while we took a look at Google's new Apple Watch competitor, the Pixel Watch, so read on for all the details on these stories and more!

Apple Releases iOS 16.0.3 With iPhone 14 Bug Fixes and More

Apple this week released iOS 16.0.3 with several bug fixes. The update addresses several issues affecting iPhone 14 models, including delayed push notifications, low microphone volume during CarPlay phone calls, and the camera being slow to launch or switch between modes.

watchOS 9.0.2 is also out for the Apple Watch and fixes bugs related to the microphone, Spotify streaming, and more.

In other software news, iPadOS 16.1 is expected to be released in the final week of October. iOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura will likely be released around the same time. Rumors suggest Apple plans to announce new iPad Pro and Mac models before the end of the month too.

iPhone SE 4 Rumored to Feature 6.1-Inch Display With Notch

The fourth-generation iPhone SE will feature a 6.1-inch LCD display with a notch, according to well-connected display industry analyst Ross Young.

While the new iPhone SE is expected to be similar to the iPhone XR from 2018, it is unclear if the budget device would be equipped with Face ID or have a Touch ID power button like the latest iPad Air and iPad mini models. The device is currently rumored to launch in 2024.

Five New Features Coming to Your iPhone With iOS 16.1

iOS 16.1 is expected to be released later this month with several new features for the iPhone.

We've rounded up five new features coming to your iPhone with iOS 16.1, including Live Activities support in third-party apps and more.

It's likely that iOS 16.2 will be released later this year with even more features that Apple has already announced.

New Apple TV Rumored to Launch in 2022 With These Four Features

Two reputable sources in analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman have both claimed that a new Apple TV could be released later this year.

With a new version of the Apple TV potentially on the horizon, we have put together a list of four rumored features and changes for the streaming box, such as an updated version of the Siri Remote.

The current Apple TV was released in May 2021.

Google's New Pixel Watch vs. Apple Watch Series 8

Google last week unveiled the Pixel Watch, a Wear OS-based smartwatch that has a round display and a suite of health tracking features.

I was expecting the SE4 to be smaller than 6.1”, at least on the 5.7-5.8”. But I guess a 5.7” LCD display would have an atypical resolution like another user said, so I guess that’s unlikely to happen… not that Apple can’t make it happen, but definitely not for the budget iPhone.

I’ve been months waiting to see if the SE fills the gap and is what I needed, but I think I should start considering other options, like the mini or waiting for the (6.1”) iPhone 15, although I’m not sure I can handle an iPhone this big. My problem with the new iPhones however is OLED, as I had a mini unit that made my eyes really sore. Hopefully in the future the new panels won’t have flickering.

Please Apple, if you’re reading this: 1) consider offering an iPhone size at least slightly smaller than 6.1”, I don’t care if it’s 5.5” or 5.8”. 2) Please please, try to source flicker free OLED panels.

I currently have an iPhone 11 and was planning to upgrade this year but the pricing of the 14s in Europe is very high. If the iPhone SE 4 is based on the same body as the 11/XR but with updated internals and main camera, I would be very tempted to get one.

That’s nice but it’s just going to be an Xr rehash. No new features added or old dropped. No new cameras. No TouchID.
SEs have exclusively, solely, without exceptions only ever been been older iPhones with new internals, with the latest and greatest SoC being the main selling point.

I get that the analysts and tech media sphere benefit greatly in traction and clicks from repeatedly exaggerating and speculating wildly about all kinds of unique designs and weirdly specific combinations of features and sizes.

But Apple’s iPhone lineup value-ladder doesn’t have room for a low-end option that has a unique new body and new features like a TouchID side button and a notch less front display and starts at $429.

-Apple never has and never will pay the r&d required to create such a devices when retail price starts at $429.

And Apple will stand by this decision as consumers have for years and years gladly bought recycled iPhones with old designs and a slew of outdated specs simply because they feature the latest and greatest SoC.

A an outdated but high quality smartphone with the World’s best SoC for $429. At its core, that’s all it is.

A unique and new design for SE4 only happens if Apple increases the price by several hundred dollars. But then SE4 starts stealing sales from the $799 mid-tier so that will never happen.

The only thing worth speculating on is how many more SEs Apple has to put out before the speculation can end?

iPhone SE = older iPhone with latest SoC, with no exceptions!

End of story.

I'm expecting a press release sometime next week on new products. I'm guessing that if we don't get any news next week, we're looking at a November launch.

I wonder if this will fix my low volume Bluetooth on my car? I don’t have CarPlay but after upgrading to iOS 16 on my iPhone 11, phone calls and audio from Siri have been extremely quiet. Anyone else experience this?

Apple seems to have an obsession with only offering large phones now. With so many large phones already I truly don’t get it. And yes, 6.1 is large to me.
Agreed, 6.1” is already gigantic to me. I can’t understand this forum’s collective preference for 6.7” monstrosities.

The mini form factor and size are absolutely perfect for me.

So mid-October and no announcements from Apple yet about new items. Usually something would come about now as people look at November being the start of Holiday budgeting and shopping. Maybe with skyrocketing cost of living Apple doesn't see this is going to be a big Holiday season for them. Apple and its infatuation with huge profit margins have always made them the expensive choice especially for gifting.

So maybe a press release and a rollout video on their website will be it. Apple will expect the holidays this year to be the new AirPods and, small iPads the some of the new sub-$1000 iPhones. 2023 going to an interesting year to see how Apple deals with the global economy and if they start focus on the lower end of their product lines.

I don’t need you to lecture me about that: I know, based on the latest rumors, that it’s going to be an XR, and the SE has always used an already existing, and widely sold, older iPhone design. Just like the X/XS, by the way.

That’s why I’ve replied to everyone else on this forum, who said that the next SE is going to be a modified mini (with Touch ID etc) to not expect that. You can see one of my hundreds of messages about that here:
Post in thread 'Apple Continues to Sell iPhone 13 Mini at Lower $599 Starting Price'
https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ower-599-starting-price.2357297/post-31592294

That’s just one example. You won’t read, on any of my interventions here, that Apple is going to design a new iPhone body for the SE lineup because it doesn’t make sense -for a company like Apple- to invest that R&D for a low cost smartphone.

So, from all the people you were to correct, you did it to the wrong person. Anyways, I appreciate that we both agree on the -for me- sad reality that Apple is not going to give us a smaller than 6.1” iPhone anymore, although, as I said, I held hopes that the leak of Ross Young of an iPhoneSE with the body of the X/XS/11pro (thus, the 5.7” he mentioned months ago) was true. But in lights of his latest information, it looks like it’s going to be an XR.

Suddenly the Asus Zenphone 9 looks more appealing, but I wouldn’t like to leave “the ecosystem”. This holydays I’ll get an iPhone 14 just to see if I’m able to adapt to 1) a huge 6.1” size, and 2) the OLED display. Otherwise maybe I’ll just grab an SE3 but I’m just fed up with this design to be honest.

Yes, same issue and iPhone 11 and don't have Carplay just Bluetooth phone.
The weird thing was initially Siri had a robotic-like voice then it become normal and then a day or so later had very low volume on Siri and phone calls. I really hope they fix it soon.
