iOS 17 Public Beta Now Available

Apple this week released the first public beta of iOS 17. The upcoming software update includes several new features and changes, including a StandBy mode when an iPhone is charging in a landscape position, improved autocorrect, interactive Home Screen widgets, the ability to download sections of Apple Maps for offline use, and more.

Not interested in the beta? iOS 17 should be released to the public in September, alongside the launch of iPhone 15 models. The software update is compatible with the iPhone XS and newer.

iPhone 15 Pro's Top Rumored Features: USB-C Port, Titanium, and More

Key new features rumored for iPhone 15 Pro models include a USB-C port, a customizable Action button, a titanium frame, a faster A17 Bionic chip manufactured with TSMC's latest 3nm process, and thinner bezels around the display. The higher-end Pro Max model is also expected to feature an upgraded Telephoto lens with periscope technology for up to 6x optical zoom.

iOS 17 Adds New 'Save to Photos' Option for Full-Page Screenshots

The latest iOS 17 developer beta and the first public beta include a new "Save to Photos" option that allows you to save full-page screenshots in apps like Safari, Notes, and Maps to your iPhone's photo library.

It was already possible to save full-page screenshots as a PDF in the Files app, but the added option of saving them to the Photos app will make it easier to share full-page screenshots in iMessage conversations and on social media.

Larger iMac With Around 32-Inch Display in Early Testing

Apple is experimenting with larger iMacs, including a model with around a 32-inch display, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. However, he said these iMacs are still in early development.

Apple discontinued the 27-inch iMac and iMac Pro, and has yet to launch a larger-screen iMac with an Apple silicon chip as a replacement, so a 32-inch iMac would be a much-awaited addition to the Mac lineup if it ever launches.

Always interested to see how the first publc beta reception fares against what was introduced at Junes WWDC each year. It indicates how much is needed to be accomplished by Sept from all the PB participants opinions/reports. :)

Feedback/info on the PB of 17?
Not good. I had a massive memory issue on my 12 pro where I got an iPhone full alert despite having 40% of my storage available. Had to emergency delete a bunch of apps just to get my phone in a workable condition and even then my safari favorites and wallpaper got wiped.

Otherwise, glitches abound. Battery life is dismal, the text bar in messages disappears regularly, and there are no quality of life improvements to be seen. Any changes I’ve seen are purely visual and don’t actual speed up or improve usage. Siri is still hopelessly crippled in its capabilities.

One noticeable and welcome improvement is autocorrect. It’s extremely well done.

Only place to go is up which they will need to do quickly to get ready by September.

Taking the weekend off, ten posts from the team this past week.

My battery life in 14 Pro is woeful. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I guess using it too much and too many background processes. On my 12 Pro Max I never had to worry about that, it just lasted 1.5 days easily. My 14 Pro goes flat by night time even though it was on charge overnight the night before, even if it was on wifi all day. Thinking of buying a MagSafe battery.

iOS 17 seems to need a clean slate for some people, for me it was totally unusable until I did a clean install and did not install a backup. Once I did it’s been smooth sailing, fixed about 95% of the bugs, yes it was a pain to start from scratch, and it took me awhile to redo all my settings, but it was worth it. I freed up almost 100gb of space, dumped a ton of old apps, and I can only imagine how much old junk was in my backup dating back maybe my iPhone 4??

So to say that is “unusable or full of glitches” isn’t entirely accurate. It’s been much more stable than iOS 16 for me ever since I started clean. I suspect many of the bigger issues are due to hardware since Apple keeps using too little ram and had that problem with the gpu and had to use the old one. I believe if Apple doubled the ram it would solve a lot of problems but I suspect they’ll continue to hold the iPhone back forever. Phones costing half as much have double the ram of the iPhone 14 pros!

One disappointment for Watch OS10 beta on my Oceanic Watch Ultra is the simple swipe between watch faces seems to be gone.

Well, I bit the bullet yesterday and tried an OTA upgrade to the public beta on my 14PM

So far it’s been pretty smooth sailing. No issues with any of the apps I use. The new autocorrect is a real improvement.

It’ll take a few days before I see how it works over time, but so far I’m pretty pleased with the current PB of 17.

I won’t touch the PB of Watch OS. Too many bad memories of doing Watch beta’s in the past.

For me, 2024 will be a year for opening the wallet. I go for:
- 16" MacBook Pro M3 Max (quite loaded)
- iPhone 15 Pro Max 512GB
- A Monitor
- A good fast big external storage solution.

Also hoping and wish that game developers use the game porting toolkit

If they did Thunderbolt, that would make the jump to USB-C worth it
It would be cool but in all honesty I can’t imagine it would be utilized very much at all. It’s an extremely small percentage that plug their phone in for anything but charging and even smaller portion that do enough data transfer to make the data rates of tbubderbolt worth it

Feedback/info on the PB of 17?

Using it on an iPhone 14 Pro. On the first day, wallpapers were out of whack and not working but that resolved itself after a few hours. Setting up personal voice seems to be weird because it’s always processing, even after a night of charging while locked.

But everything else, including wallpapers, has worked flawlessly ever since. This is the first beta I’ve run where I forgot I’m on a beta in everyday use. New features are nice, especially the Standby thing.

iPadOS 17 Public Beta here on my iPad Pro M1 is good, no big issues.

Finally on my iPad when Quick Looking a pdf file on the Files app I can get rid of the left side thumbnails bar by clicking on the "x of y" button on the upper left corner, like I was already able to do on my iPhone since ages ago. I just wish it would remember my preference, so I wouldn't have to hide the left side bar everytime I open a new pdf. Unfortunately, iPadOS is very poor on customizations and settings, it's frustrating.

And I really don't like that I need to do more clicks on my iPad than on my Mac to do the same thing, for example to maximize a window on iPad (Stage Manager) I need to click on the three dots (...) on the top-center, then click on the Full Screen option, while on the Mac I just need to do one click (on the green dot on the top-left corner). iPadOS is just too complicated and poor. I'm just leaving Stage Manager off, I always try to use it but after a while I just get tired of it and turn it off again.

It is wild that they improved a lot of DUAL SIM features but they have not added an ability to use Dual WhatsApp. It's like we will let you use personal and work sim but not dual app for personal/work. Apple has a lot of catching up to do...

I can agree 100%!!!! My battery life on my 14PM is terrible compared to what I had with my 12PM even though I don't do anything differently or use it anymore/less than previous usage. Apple lately hasn't given me much to want to stick around for honestly....
